Bollywood is an integral part of Indian cinema and has been noticed worldwide. However, women centric movies or female oriented movies have been a rare sight. Heroines are generally portrayed as helpless sister, love interest or a stereotypical mother.

Shashi is a simple housewife played by Sridevi in the movie, English Vinglish emphasises how empty a woman’s life can become without respect. She strives to learn the one language in which she was weak and was mocked for not knowing – English. In due course she finds herself and regains her self-respect amidst her family.
2) Queen (2013)
This movie tells the story of Rani who, after being rejected by her fiancé on the day of her wedding, decides to go on her honeymoon alone. She faces every possible hindrance on her trip from a thief to sharing a hostel room with three men and all this with a broken heart. The end shows her as a stronger and different person altogether.
3) Mary Kom (2014)
The accomplishments of Indian women, especially sportswomen, are amazing. Mary Kom is one such lady who through her endeavours has achieved a lot in her boxing career. This has led her to win prestigious awards like Padma Bhushan, Padma Shree and Arjuna Award and many more. The movie, Mary Kom portrays her struggle towards achieving her goal and is truly inspiring.
4) Neerja (2016)
The movie Neerja is based on a real-life story of a beautiful, young senior flight purser, Neerja Bhanot who sacrificed her life to save many others. Her plane was hijacked by terrorists at Karachi airport and she bravely decided to help the innocent passengers escape instead of fleeing to safety. This movie is sure to fill you with courage at the undying compassion of this woman.
5) Akira (2016)
Akira is a story of a strong headed woman whose character is a refreshing change from the subdued roles which we’re used to watching on screen. As our protagonist watches a woman tormented by unruly men who throw acid on her face, she decides to fight the odds instead of being a mute spectator. Do watch this movie to watch the brave new woman come to life.
