Ah monsoon! The season where the smell of wet ground is absolutely bliss. Along with the cool breeze after the dreadful heat of the summers, the monsoon also brings with itself a number of nasty diseases.
Due to the warm, wet climate, skin infections are in common during this season. There are a few common diseases that strike without warning. Here are some of them:
1. Malaria: Malaria is a disease that’s feared by many. The disease is not so pretty. This is spread from the female anopheles mosquito. As India has a history of water logging, these mosquitos hibernate and thrive in these waters. The disease has claimed 30% of lives in India alone. Starting symptoms are fever at regular intervals, sweating, shivers, muscle pain that a person experiences with Malaria.
Prevention: Always put mosquito repellent before sleeping, check if your surrounding doesn’t have water logging, be aware of the risks of Malaria.
Home remedies: Apply cold pack to keep the temperatures down. Take a long sheet of cloth and dip it in water and cover your whole body. Keep it on for 10 minutes. Also, use Tulsi (Basil) leaves to bring down fever. Make a juice of the basil leaves and drink in small quantities.
2. Typhoid: Typhoid is a very common disease in the monsoon as it’s a water-borne disease. It is caused by the Styptic bacteria which is transmitted through contaminated water and food. It can remain in the body even after the patient is cured. Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain and headaches.
Prevention: One should isolate themselves from the rest of the family as it’s a communicable disease. Patient should consume fluids to combat dehydration and after getting cured.
Home remedies: Keep yourself hydrated by having lots of water. Due to high fever & diarrhoea, you might get dehydrated. Also, eat 2 garlic cloves to curb typhoid fever.
3. Viral Fever: Viral fever is common in the monsoons due to the changing weather. Sneezing, cold, body shivers, sore throat & fevers are symptoms of this.
Prevention: Keep yourself dry and out of the rain as much as possible. Best remedy is to drink hot liquids or have turmeric milk.
Home remedies: Have coriander seed tea. It contains vitamins and phytonutrients which help boost the immune system. In addition to this you can also make basic leaves tea. Just crush basil leaves in a mould and bring to boil with water. Drink this every 2 hours.
4. Dengue: Dengue is another deadly disease which is caused by mosquitos. The way it works is when a mosquito bites a person with dengue, the virus enters the mosquito and when the infected mosquito bites another person, the virus enters that person’s bloodstream. It is caused by the Anopheles mosquito a.k.a. the Tiger mosquito.
Prevention: Use aerosols in the house, wear long sleeved clothes and long pants while going out, apply mosquito repellents and keep surrounding in the house clean.
Home remedies: Crush papaya leaves and drink the juice to help flush out toxins. You can also get fenugreek leaves by crushing them and having its juice or methi powder with water.
5. Jaundice: Jaundice is a yellowish tinge on the skin caused by hyperbilirubinemia (excess of bilirubin in the blood). With this disease body fluids are yellow.
Prevention: Avoid heavy alcohol consumption. Get vaccinated for Hepatitis A & B and avoid consumption of alcohol and maintain good hygiene.
Home remedies: Have tomato juice with a pinch of salt and pepper on an empty stomach early morning. This is effective in curbing jaundice. You can also have ganne ka juice (Sugarcane) as it helps in proper digestion and proper live functioning. Ensure that the sugarcane is properly extracted. Another remedy is by drinking lemon juice thrice a day.
6. Swine Flu: Swine flu also known as H1N1 virus, is a new strain of influenza virus that causes symptoms like regular flu. It originated from pigs but is spread primarily from person to person.
Prevention: If you’re sick you should stay at home. Wash your hands thoroughly. Use sanitizer whenever possible especially after coming in contact with handshakes, touching doorknobs, door handles etc. Use a handkerchief and cover your coughs and sneezes.
Home remedies: Drink plenty of fluids including warm soups to prevent dehydration & Get a good amount of rest.
